Catherine Mathias

Catherine Mathias has an unhealthy preoccupation with the country of France. She has no idea why. At age nine, she named her cat Chat but pronounced it horribly wrong. How was she to know the French can be so negligent with their consonants? On her first trip to France at age sixteen, she pretended to be fluent in French, but that backfired when her group got lost and they asked her to interpret. She went on to earn fluency with a degree in French from the University of Florida, and today she is very good at helping friends avoid ordering fish heads in French restaurants.

She was a theater critic for Space Coast Press and book columnist for Florida Today newspaper and writes for various magazines. She’s also a contributor to BrevardCulture.com. From her time in Paris, plus Provence and the Loire Valley, she is amused by the meticulousness and playfulness she finds in the French.
